What constitutes a healthy diet then?
First, there is substantial proof that has been accumulated through years of experience of both patients and doctors that you lose unwanted weight sitting around your waistline and hips (as well as in other parts of your body) if you switch to a high-fiber diet like that espoused by vegetarians and vegans. A high-fiber diet based on consumption of fruits, vegetables and moderate amounts of meat and dairy products has many benefits that make it a healthy diet and effective for weight loss. Fruits and vegetables do contain much dietary fiber which is why they are so crunchy. That fiber serves a dual purpose: it allows your colon to be cleansed from within as the veggies and fruits pass through, thus acting like mini brooms that sweep the internal surface of your colon; and when your body absorbs part of the dietary fiber, the fiber helps sweep your blood vessels free of cholesterol forming inside at certain points. A clean colon is one that is less likely to develop colonic cancer while a clean bloodstream is one less likely to have plaque formations from cholesterol that lead to stroke and heart ailments.
A high-fiber diet may even be cheaper than your old diet made up of Twinkies, soda, cakes and ice cream (and maybe a steak thrown in the frying pan for your dinner at night.) Fruits and vegetables are more filling and – over time, as you wean yourself away from your previous food preferences – may even taste better for you. In time, your sense of taste will get cleaned up and you find yourself appreciating the simpler taste of fruits and vegetables.
This switch to fruits and vegetables will eventually clean up your body to the point that you actually smell better –really! It is a fact that people who consume high levels of protein tend to smell bad (even developing bad breath) while people who eat fruits and vegetables do not have such a strong scent about them.
But how do you lose those kilos hanging around your body parts?
You will find that you will tend to lug home big bags of fruits and vegetables from the grocery store – did you know that is one form of exercise already, particularly if you walk home? Those fruits and vegetables often need to be washed, chopped and bagged properly for storage which will develop your stores of patience even as you learn that you actually know how to do all that for yourself. With more vitamins and minerals coursing into your body, your bodily systems get better nourished.
Still, there are really some fat stores that are stubborn, even when you diet. So you need to complement your diet to lose those kilos by a moderate form of exercise. Do not copy some TV programs where the obese contestants are made to undergo severely stressful exercises like lifting very heavy weights, or running under strenuous conditions, or even try to sweat out the extra pounds with sauna sessions.
Those are bad for you, bad for your heart, bad for many of your bodily systems, and you may wind up giving yourself more health problems like a heart attack or a hernia.
