Motivation, Major Factor to Losing Weight –

or Bane of Your Existence?

Having enough courage and conviction that you can lose weight will help you lose weight.

If you do not have determination for what you want to accomplish, then you will fail. So courage is important. But courage, determination and dedication are not the sole factors to consider in proper weight loss. Motivating yourself and getting the support of family and friends are other important factors in battling weight loss.

Motivating children to lose weight, for instance, is a complicated matter. Four of the most common ways to help children who are overweight all need to be done with the help of the family of the child. All help should start from their own homes before the outside world can intervene.

First, try and encourage your child to get into sports or dance classes or activities. Physical activities like these can help them burn the fat and use their energy in the way it is supposed to be used. Exercise with your child. It does not mean that if you are not overweight, you are exempt from exercising. Face it, your children look up to you - their parent - and it would be fun for them if they do activities with you by their side.

Second, limit the TV time of your child.

Watching TV is the best way to be unproductive. The more time your child spends in front of the TV, the more time is wasted being inactive. Video games, movies and the computer can wreak more havoc in your child than playing basketball inside the house because what is destroyed are the mental, social and physical states of your child (in that order.) You might think that staying inside the house in front of the TV is much safer for your child than playing outside. You are wrong.

Third, remove junk food from inside your home.

Make time to feed your kids healthy meals and replace the sugary and fatty foods with a fruit diet instead. Fruits and veggies are the best food to deliver the nutrition your child really needs, rather than fast food that fills up their tummy with nothing but junk and empty calories.

Fourth, check with a pediatrician and ask what he can do to help your child control his weight and if he can think up strategies on how to keep your child healthy.

People are conditioned to behave a certain way when you grant rewards to them, just like when pet dogs are given treats when they do a trick well. We do realize that we were conditioned in childhood to enjoy holidays like Halloween because of the treats we were given then. In your adult years, you might celebrate with eating high-fat food (like a creamy cake or French fries) for a successful day at work. You might even buy yourself a gallon of ice cream all for yourself. It is time to change that old thinking of using food as a reward. There are a lot of other things that are just as effective as eating, to reward yourself or your child.

Think about rewarding yourself with something other than food. Some of the rewards that you could substitute instead of food are: a day at the beach, more play time with your peers, shopping, buying a new CD, or playing musical instruments (among many other activities that do not involve food in any way.) Then teach your child to follow your example.

Remember that the greater the amount of encouragement you give to your child, the more motivation they get to eat healthier.

It always starts and ends with the family.

Always.
